American-born Mara worked at Hillel in the US where she met her friend Hila, an Israeli who convinced Mara to visit Israel on a 5 month MASA program called Career Israel. The two often joked that Hila would find Mara a “chatan” (groom), and sure enough, when Mara visited Hila for the first time in Israel, she met Tom, Hila’s kibbutznik-lawyer roommate… her future husband!
Tom proposed to Mara in the summer of 2011 with her grandmother’s ring inside the synagogue of the Jewish Museum in Rome during a trip to Italy. The couple decided to have two weddings, one in Mara’s hometown synagogue in Wilmington, Delaware, and a second at Havat Allenby, Tom’s beit yeladim (children’s house) on the kibbutz where he grew up. After their two weddings, the couple celebrated their honeymoon with a 30 day road trip, hiking and camping around 8 national parks on the US west coast.
